Excel will tell you that the string in A1 has a length of 4, but you won't see it. You can enter a tab using a formula, say =CHAR(9)&"abc" in cell A1, but Excel will not display the tab character. Those are the first thirty-one glyphs of the old ASCII character set.Įxcel will not display a tab character, \t, in a cell. This function removes characters from U+0001 to U+001F from a string. will open their display with a driverless carriage of four horses. To represent a line feed as part of a formula, you use CHAR(10). To type a line feed character to break a cell's formula or text string into multiple lines, you use Alt+Enter. You may see a miniscule dot after typing Ctrl+j-or maybe not. To enter a carriage return, \r, you use Ctrl+m. In the "Find what" box of Excel's Find and Replace dialogues, to enter a line feed character, \n, you have to type Ctrl+j. You can reimport (or copy-paste) the data back into Excel afterwards. If you have a lot of string manipulation to do, I will suggest using a VBA or Python or Perl script or exporting the text to notepad++ and doing the cleanup there.
Unfortunately, Excel is not a good text editor. Notepad++ uses C programming escape sequences and can also use a Perl style regular expression language.
